Edvard Munch's themes within his work tends to revolve around the intense, evocative treatment of psychological themes. As well as this, a lot of his paintings were examinations and reflections of his own emotional state, such was the case with the painting, "The Sick Child."
This links to Much's style and the way that he created his paintings, he broke away from the style of the time by focusing upon the simplified forms and sharp contrast to portray only what he felt was the necessary elements of the painting, often leading to his work being dismissed as unfinished.
In terms of Munch's influences, he was originally taught by the naturalistic painter Christian Krogh, this is evidenced through Much's experimentation with the naturalistic style of painting as well as impressionism. Munch's work tended to be oil paint on canvas or board.
