L.S.Lowry

Laurence Stephen Lowry focused the majority of his career on depicting urban scenes of the industrial districts of North West England. His urban landscapes exude a sense of deep gloominess, the figures within the paintings were often referred to as 'match stick men' due to the unusual way in which Lowry depicts the figures.

it appears as though the figures in the paintings felt almost inconsequential to Lowry, were it appears as though the majority of his attention and effort was put into the depiction of the landscape and urban industry,

When talking about Lowry's influences, one of his main influences was the french painter, Adolphe Valette who taught Lowry at Manchester's Municipal College of Art.

I feel that the main ideas behind Lowry's work is that he was trying to capture the beauty of the north's industrial districts rather than representing them as a bleak landscape.
