Otto Dix is best know for his painfully realistic and harsh depictions of Weimar society as well as the atrocities of war, his work became a commentary on post war weimar society, his triptych 'Metropolis' was a scornful portrayal of the depraved actions of the Weimar Republic, where nonstop revelry was how they chose to deal with the wartime defeat and financial catasdstrophe.

His work was briefly influenced by expressionism during 1919, as well as touching on Dadaism where he began to incorporate collage elements into his work. However, he moved away from both of these styles to start to paint in the way of the old masters, thin glazes of oil paint that were painted over a tempera under painting. In terms of the material that he used to create his work, Dix used oil on canvas as well as mixed media on wood and oil on wood.
