9 Paintings with No More Nails

This exhibition featured the work of Senior Lecturer, James Hutchinson who teaches at on the MA Fine Art course and the BA Fine Art course at Sunderland University. The work that was being exhibited in the Priestman Gallery were a set of 9 canvases of various sizes, James explained that the canvases had been works in progress for over six years. The work was built on recycled and reused canvases that had been thrown out by students at the university, using these canvases to focus his work about building materials, the work originated when James began to work on and refurbish his family home, using what was left of the building materials as materials for his paintings. Over the period of refurbishment, the materials were directly used onto the canvas, the materials included tape, paint, nails, sandpaper, floor insulator and glue.
