1) What interests or drives you?
For my second semester project, I'm going to be focusing on portraiture and the experience of being human in the 21st Century. I'm going to attempt to represent and explore this concept by creating abstract portraits that focus more on capturing a particular emotion or feeling instead of a traditionally realistic portrait.
2) What materials do you think might best serve your investigations? What media/areas do you intend to explore?
In terms of materials that I'm going to be using and experimenting with, I intend to start with using acrylic paints before moving into trying out oil paint and watercolour. The main thing that I want to experiment is the material that I used to make my work on, so I'm going to be moving away from using paper all the time and instead branch into using canvas, both stretched and unstretched, wallpaper, thick cardboard and wooden panels. As well as the variety of paints, I want to explore the way that I draw, using charcoal, pastels etc but venture more into mixing them with other media instead of leaving them as monochromatic drawings. Finally, I'm going to continue to work with clay and 3D sculptural materials, letting my 3D work feed into my painting and drawing practice to further it.
3) How will you measure your success?
I suppose that I'm going to measure my success by evaluating the work that I made at the end of the project and checking to see whether or not I made the work that I said I was going to make.
