This week I decided to experiment with the concept of painting with clay. Instead of just sculpting the clay in freeform, I decided to sculpt it straight onto the wallpaper that I was using as a background. I found it pretty easy to get the clay to stick to the surface while it was wet. However, the problems started once the clay started to dry, because of the flexibility of the paper, the clay began to peel away until it was almost hanging off of the paper. I made the decision to take it off of the paper rather than have it eventually drop, although the piece ended up cracking later due to hardening in the air. Looking back, I feel that the idea was strong but I could have chosen a better material for the background, I think that if I were to do it again I'd use wood panel in order to make the entire work more stable.

I ended up using the background for another piece rather than letting it go to waste, constructing the painting around the area where the clay had originally stuck, incorporating the marks it had left instead of painting over the top.

In terms of artists that helped influence this piece of work, I began by looking at Alberto Giacometti and Louise Bourgeois.
