I ended up changing how I was painting this piece after I began to get more and more frustrated with how precise and clean my lines had to be and how long it took to make and then dry. I slipped back into my old practice and began to use thick, impasto paint to creature the textured background, switching to a palette knife in order to create a variety of raised and depressed textures within the paint. Overall, I like the contrast that occurred between the two painting styles and I feel that the piece is better, overall, for having this clashing juxtaposition rather than just being one thing.
The two new drawings that I started stemmed from revisiting the work of Egon Schiele, as well as making a conscious effort to change the format of the material I normally work on. In this case, using an elongated strip of wallpaper instead of a square piece of cardboard. The new format led me to doing a full body portrait instead of the traditional bust I normally do, challenging how I viewed the body and how I would execute it in this new format.
